Discover our bi-directional charging stations, which allow your electric car to return energy to your home or the electricity grid. Efficient, sustainable and future-proof.

Bi-directional Charging Station: Your Electric Car as a Mobile Energy Source for Home & Grid

Welcome to Accu-Machine.nl, the specialist in the future of electric charging. A bidirectional charging station is the most advanced innovation in e-mobility, fundamentally changing the role of your electric car. It's no longer just about charging your car; with a bidirectional charging station, your vehicle can also feed power back into your home or the grid. This opens the door to unprecedented flexibility, sustainability, and significant cost savings.

Choose a bidirectional charging station and transform your electric car into a powerful, mobile energy storage system. These charging stations are the key to an energy-efficient and self-sufficient future, where your EV plays an active role in your personal energy management.

What is Bi-directional Charging and Why is it the Future?

Bidirectional charging refers to the ability of a charging station and an electric car to allow current to flow in two directions:

  1. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): Energy flows from the car back to the electricity grid. This helps stabilize the grid, especially during peaks in demand or supply of renewable energy, and can provide financial benefits.
  2. Vehicle-to-Home (V2H): Energy flows directly from your car to your home. This allows you to power your home with stored energy, for example, in the evening when the sun isn't shining or during a power outage.
  3. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): While this usually works via an adapter on the car itself, it is the concept of supplying power to external devices that is a precursor to bi-directional thinking.

Why is this crucial for the future?

  • Energy independence: Use your car's energy as a home battery, especially in combination with solar panels. Charge with solar power during the day and use that energy for your home in the evening.
  • Cost savings: Earn money by feeding power back into the grid when prices are high and charging when prices are low (dynamic energy tariffs). Reduce your energy costs by powering your home with your own car.
  • Grid stability: Your car contributes to a more stable electricity grid by flexibly supplying power when needed, which is essential for the integration of more wind and solar energy.
  • Sustainability: Maximize the use of green energy by using stored solar power when it is not being generated.
  • Emergency Power Supply: In the event of a power outage, your car can act as a reliable backup power source for your home.

How Does a Bidirectional Charging Station Work? The Technical Reality

Bidirectional charging is more complex than standard AC charging. It requires:

  1. DC Power: The power is converted from AC (mains power) to DC (for the battery) and back again. This happens at the charging station or, in the future, partly in the car. The bidirectional charging station is essentially an advanced DC charger that can operate in both directions.
  2. Compatible Car: Not every electric car can charge bidirectionally. The vehicle must have the necessary hardware and software to return power. Supported models are still relatively rare, but the list is growing.
  3. Compatible Home Energy Management System (HEMS): For V2H and V2G, smart integration with your meter box and any solar panels/home batteries is required to manage energy flows safely and efficiently.
  4. Connectivity: The charging station communicates continuously with the car, the home and/or the grid management platform (via standards such as ISO 15118 and OCPP).

Connections:

  • For V2G and V2H via DC charging, the CCS2 connection is the most common standard in Europe, although there are also solutions with CHAdeMO.
  • For V2L (power from the car via a wall socket), the car often uses an adapter on the charging port (usually Type 2 or CCS2) or a specific 230V outlet.

Available Models and Speed: The Pioneers of Bi-directional Charging

The market for bidirectional charging stations is still developing, but groundbreaking solutions are already available. Charging speeds for bidirectional charging are typically equal to or slightly slower than regular DC fast-charging speeds:

  • AC charging speed: Bi-directional charging stations usually focus on DC charging for feed-in, but of course also offer AC charging options (up to 22 kW) for charging the car.
  • DC power (feed-in): The power at which electricity can be fed back (V2G/V2H) varies, but is often between 6 kW and 12 kW DC , with the potential for higher powers in the future.

Cars with Bi-directional Capability (V2G/V2H/V2L - a growing list):

  • Nissan Leaf (via CHAdeMO)
  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (via CHAdeMO)
  • Hyundai IONIQ 5 / IONIQ 6 (via V2L AC adapter, and future V2G/V2H via CCS2)
  • Kia EV6/EV9 (via V2L AC adapter, and future V2G/V2H via CCS2)
  • Volkswagen ID. models (future V2G/V2H functionality via CCS2, with software updates)
  • MG ZS EV / MG4 / MG5 (via V2L AC adapter)
  • Ford F-150 Lightning (V2H/V2G via dedicated Ford Charge Station Pro in North America, not yet standard in Europe)
  • BYD models (via V2L AC adapter)
  • Volvo EX90 (future V2L/V2H/V2G functionality via CCS2)

Top Brands for Bi-directional Charging Stations in Our Collection

We carefully select the most innovative charging station brands that are taking the step towards bidirectional charging:

  • Wallbox Quasar (1 & 2): The Wallbox Quasar was one of the first bidirectional DC chargers for home use (Quasar 1 with CHAdeMO). The Wallbox Quasar 2 is the latest generation, focused on V2H/V2G via CCS2 , allowing you to use your car's energy to power your home, ideal for energy independence.
  • Fronius (in combination with Inverter & Home Energy System): While Fronius themselves do not produce a specific "charging station" that is bi-directional as standard, their inverters and energy management systems are often the core of V2H/V2G solutions, where a compatible charging station (that integrates with their system) allows for charging and discharging.
  • Other Emerging Brands: The market is evolving rapidly, and brands such as DCbel and specialist partners of automakers are also developing bi-directional solutions that will become available in the future.
