Why is it useful to purchase/use a charging station for business purposes?

Which charging station is suitable for your company?

The right charging station depends on several factors. Do you have space for one, or just a wall-mounted charging point? Do you only need to charge your own car, or do several employees already drive electric vehicles? And what are your company's future expectations and plans for electric driving? Charging stations are also available in various capacities. The higher the capacity, the faster a car charges.

Charging stations start at around €750 excluding VAT. This doesn't include installation costs and a service contract. Charging stations with multiple charging points are ideal for businesses, allowing multiple cars to be charged simultaneously. Charging is often paid for with a charging card, allowing you to decide who can charge their car at your station.

Where do you place the charging stations: at the office or at employees' homes?

When purchasing a charging station, it's important to consider the best location. Installing one in your company's parking lot offers several advantages. It allows employees and customers to easily charge their electric cars, and it gives your company a sustainable image.

But what if an employee travels a lot for work? Then it might be more convenient to install the charging station at their home so they can charge their car overnight. It's wise to document this clearly. What happens, for example, if the employee moves or leaves the company? Does the charging station move with them? And who pays these costs? You can include agreements about this in the car insurance policy. Don't forget to include any reimbursement for charging costs.

What about the charging costs?

As an employer, you can reimburse your employees free of charge for the use of a company car, including charging. This applies to charges at public charging stations, office charging stations, and at employees' homes. Employees must be able to provide a specification showing their consumption in kWh and the applicable rate. Charging costs are not reimbursed for employees who own their own electric car. They fall under the standard scheme, which entitles them to a reimbursement of €0.19 per km.

New office building? At least one charging station required for every 10 parking spaces

Since 2020, it has been mandatory to consider electric charging points when constructing new non-residential buildings. This also applies to existing non-residential buildings undergoing major renovations. The basic principle is that at least one electric charging point must be installed for every 10 employee parking spaces. From 2025 onwards, at least one charging point must be installed for existing non-residential buildings with at least 20 parking spaces. This regulation falls under the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, which provides more information on the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) website.

Apply for subsidies for charging stations

If you spend at least €2,500 on electric charging points (possibly in combination with an electric vehicle), you can use the MIA and Vamil schemes.

With the Environmental Investment Deduction (MIA), you can write off up to 36% of your investment amount from your profit, in addition to the standard investment deduction. In certain cases, you can also use the Vamil scheme, which allows you to write off up to 75% of your investment costs. An overview of the various subsidy programs is available on the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) website.

Also consider charging points for electric bicycles

Thanks to the new bicycle leasing scheme, leasing (electric) bicycles has become more attractive for employees since this year. As a result, electric bicycles are increasingly being used for commuting. The battery of an electric bicycle can be charged at any household outlet using the included charger. Charging costs are reimbursed using the allowance in the work-related costs scheme (WKR).

Would you also like to offer your employees the option of charging their bikes at the office? Make sure they have access to a covered, dry, and lockable bike shed with power outlets.

ANWB joins forces with Eneco for the installation of charging stations

ANWB, in partnership with Eneco, recently started offering charging stations for homes and offices. We supply and install the charging station, including a hosting contract. This gives you a personalized digital environment with an overview of all charging transactions and costs incurred. We can automatically settle the charging costs for you and your employees with your company. It's possible to connect the charging stations to existing solar panels, making them even more sustainable and often profitable. Even if you don't have solar panels, we ensure that the electricity you use is 100% sustainable.
