A mobile charging station, what can you do with it?

You have to charge an electric car, otherwise you'll get nowhere. You can use a mobile charger or a charging station for charging. A mobile charger is essentially nothing more than a cable with a system built in that communicates between the car and the outlet. A charging station, like a wall charger, is a more elegant and comprehensive solution. But does this mean a mobile charger isn't an option? Quite the opposite; charging at home with mobile chargers is extremely common. You can read everything you need to know about this here.

What exactly is a mobile charging station?

Let's get straight to the point: the mobile charging station literally doesn't resemble a charging station at all. A mobile charging station for electric cars is a cable with two plugs, equipped with a "box" containing the control equipment. One of the plugs is compatible with a standard wall socket (outlet). The other plug is compatible with the EV.

By plugging one plug into the socket and the other plug into the EV and then starting the box, the car is charged.

What are the benefits of a mobile charging station?

Better mobile charging stations (or home chargers) are equipped with many clever features. For example, they communicate between the car and the socket to prevent overcharging. If the car indicates the battery has reached its maximum charge, the box shuts down communication between the car and the socket. If the system detects a dip in the power grid, or if the voltage is too high, charging is interrupted. Better mobile charging stations are programmed to automatically resume charging when the power grid is stable again. This is also called a restart function.

Another – fairly obvious – advantage of the mobile charging station is that it's… mobile. This means you can also take it with you to work (if there aren't enough charging stations there) or when you're visiting someone. Better mobile charging stations, like this home charger , are equipped with a meter that tracks the kWh. This way, you know immediately how much you owe someone when you charge your car somewhere you're a guest.

Note that most of our mobile home chargers can charge at 16A. This is a bigger advantage than you might think. Many mobile charging stations on the market can charge at up to 10A. Charging at 16A allows you to charge much faster (60% faster than with a 10A charger).

What should I pay attention to when choosing a mobile charging station?

With better mobile charging stations, you can control the charging speed yourself. It's wise to connect the charger to an empty circuit or one with low load (so no freezers, washing machines, kettles, or dishwashers on the same circuit). This way, the maximum speed can be utilized, resulting in a much faster charging time.

You'll need a power outlet near your car. If one isn't available, contact an electrician and tell them what you need the outlet for. They'll then arrange a new circuit for you, ensuring optimal charging. Keep in mind that the cables of mobile charging stations have a maximum load capacity when driving over them. The maximum load capacity is listed with our products. It's best, of course, to avoid driving over the charger's cables.

Also note the type of plug you need. There are two different types of charging cables. Type 1 (J1772) is not the same as type 2 (Mennekes).

Should you choose a mobile charging station or a fixed charging station?

Have you bought an EV or have a model in mind and now need a way to charge your car at home? You basically have two options. One is a home charging station, often wall-mounted. The other is a portable charging station that plugs directly into a wall socket.

Some websites suggest a fixed charging station is best when there's no nearby outlet. However, the cost of installing an outlet depends on the specifics; often, it's quite reasonable, and the electrician can create a new circuit for you right away, ensuring optimal charging.

It's better to consider whether you want to be able to claim the costs, for example, because you need to charge a company car at home. In that case, a charging station with a back office is a better option. If you don't need that and a mobile charging station that provides insight into your consumption, albeit without a monthly overview, is sufficient, then a mobile charging station is an excellent solution.

Are you a business owner looking for solutions for employees whose long-term employment is uncertain, and don't want to have to draw up complicated agreements? Then a mobile charging station is the best solution. It can simply be returned upon termination of employment, without any additional costs.
